Knee Joint Arthritis

Knee joint arthritis is an extremely common condition, affecting thousands of Australians. There are several factors that contribute to the development of the condition, but one of the key issues is bodyweight. As our population has become heavier, the prevalence of knee joint arthritis has increased. Being a weight bearing joint the knees are especially affected by excess bodyweight, and weight loss is one of the long-term goals in the management of osteoarthritis. Correct footwear is also important, ideally with good cushioning in the sole and adequate arch support.

As osteoarthritis of the knee joint progresses, there is a tendency for weakness to develop in the muscles around the knee. These muscles play a pivotal supportive role for the knee, and as they become weak they lose the ability to provide this support to the knee joint. This results in further degeneration of the joint and a perpetuation of this viscous cycle of pain and weakness. Thus it is extremely important to be undertaking specific strengthening exercises for the muscles around the knee.

Other treatment involves reducing inflammation and swelling with ice packs, combined with specific soft tissue massage therapy to release excessive muscle tightness and encourage pain free motion around the knee joint. Our therapist here at The Glen Back Care & Sports Therapy provide exceptional treatment for osteoarthritis of the knee joint, helping you get back on your feet and able to enjoy activities once again.
