Ankle Pain

Ankle pain is a common presentation at our practice. People often suffer an ankle sprain whilst playing sport, or when walking on an uneven surface. The typical mechanism is when the ankle ‘rolls’, with sudden pain in the lateral or outer aspect of the ankle, followed by difficulty walking, swelling and pain.

Often what has occurred is a sprain of the lateral ligament complex, involving a partial tear of one or more of the 3 bands of ligaments on the outer side of the ankle. These ligaments are vital in providing support to the ankle joint, and injury to these joints can potentially weaken the ankle significantly.

You may have heard people say “It’s just a sprain”. Sprains are significant injuries and require correct rehabilitation to avoid long term dysfunction. It is vital to seek appropriate treatment with a physiotherapist to restore range of motion, flexibility, strength and balance to the ankle joint. Without such rehabilitation the ankle joint can be left weakened, making it much more likely for the injury to occur yet again.

Our physiotherapists are experts in the rehabilitation of ankle pain. To find out how we can help you, click on the ‘book now’ button on our website, or give us a call on 95609393.
